      COURSE DESCRIPTION


      This course helps students develop English language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing for everyday situations. The class is taught using a student-centered communicative approach to English language learning. The total time of the course is 216 hours.

      COURSE GOALS


      This course focuses on basic English including lecture, vocabulary and grammar practice, and an expectation of participation every class session. Students read short texts, write about various topics introduced in class. Also, students practice listening skills through various types of audios. In addition, students discuss and present information to their classmates. The core competencies of reading, writing, listening, and speaking will be given equal importance.

      Listen to a various types of audio such as:

      • Town meeting

      Speaking

      Use information and ideas to
      • Interview a classmate. Then introduce him or her to the class.
      • Give a presentation about a perfect school.
      • Design a survey and interview a classmate.
      • Have a group discussion about fun places in the area.
      • Design a perfect home.
      • Make a health survey and discuss it with a partner.
      • Give a presentation about where you want to travel.
      • Give a presentation about how a classmate uses technology.

      In reading, students are able to identify topics and main ideas of the short text. They are able to identify pronoun references used in the reading correctly.


      In listening, students are able to identify opinions, examples, and sequences in different types of listening. Students are able to pronounce simple present third-person -s/ -es, -ed ending, compound nouns, and numbers with -teen and -ty correctly. Also, students are able to stress important words in sentences.


      In speaking, students can introduce themselves, mention their family members, and talk in words or phrases about simple daily activities. They can also express their opinions, ask for repetition and keep a conversation going.


      In writing, students can write simple sentences on a topic that is familiar to them with a proper capitalization and punctuation. They are able to use correct subject-verb agreement in different types of sentences.


      Students are able to use different types of collocations in sentences correctly such as collocations for hobbies and interests, verb + noun collocations, collocations with do, play, and go. Also, students can use prefixes and suffixes and compound nouns in sentences correctly.


      Students are able to use present of be and past of be and the simple past in affirmative statements. In addition, students are able to use prepositions of location, subject and object pronouns in sentences correctly.
